The Elektron Digitone workflow is what finally made me fall back in love with FM synthesis. As a former owner of a Yamaha TX81z, I was always enamored with the sonic potential of Frequency Modulation. However, getting those sounds was a battle. With no software editor and no external controller, it was just a million button presses and a level of patience I simply don't possess anymore. When the original Elektron Digitone dropped, it instantly brought me back. It gave me access to those lovely, dirty, wobbly, and dense textures that FM is so good at, but with a streamlined synthesizer workflow that actually invited creativity. The new and improved Digitone II takes everything the original FM engine could do and adds an incredible amount more including polyphony. There is something about the Elektron Syntakt that keeps pulling me back. In many ways it is the distillation of the Analog RYTM and the Model Cycles. But it is far more than the sum of its parts. It has a wide range of sounds and capabilities but I find myself using it to express frustration and anger. It's my happy - unhappy machine. I plan on testing myself in the future by attempting to make beautiful music with it, but I'm still in the angry stage and will be spending this evening abusing all the massive sounding machines that live within. My first song on the OP-XY. Normally I can't help but twist knobs and mash buttons during a performance but I feel this tune simply didn't need it! This little device is like the amazing insects that surround us. Unbelievably tiny yet incredibly powerful and capable. I've totally fallen for it. I greatly look forward to improvements that I believe TE will put out over time but honestly, it is superb exactly how it is. It has joined my fleet and I look forward to more music with it as well as some custom soundpacks that I intend to make for it. Is the end really the end? Heck if I know but I certainly hope not. There is just too much to enjoy. But not being sure does help you appreciate things much more. As 2026 comes marching in, I continue to fall in love with my Tonverk. Yes, some bugs are still present (currently dealing with one that causes issues when controlling from an external midi device) but hot damn, this thing is fun. I had to try out the granular engine and even though I thought the pad sound I created with the Korg Wavestate II was sheer beauty, the granular engine gave it a whole new life. The OP-XY is Tiny... and I’m Terrified. Is this the most powerful "pocket" synth ever made? 🎹 I've got my hands on the Teenage Engineering OP-XY and I genuinely can't believe how much tech is crammed into this incredibly engineered, muted beauty. It’s much smaller than I expected, but the sound? It’s absolutely massive.
